3 strikes and your internet's gone

http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/digital-life-news/net-pirates-face-th...

This is insane. The definition of insane. So insane that I am simply unable to compose suitable attack without it sounding like a long winded rant. I am therefore speechless at the stupidity and OTTness of Conroy and the Labor Government.

"Depending on the outcome of the case, the Government will determine whether there is a need for legislative change"

In other words - if the major distibution companies lose, the government will take action - way to respect the descision of the courts!

I agree that this is insanely stupid.

"Many in our industry believe that, had the music industry mobilised earlier to embrace the internet and exploit its inherent efficiencies, we would have already seen the kind of win-win outcome that we've seen in other areas of online activity such as travel and online banking"

No truer words have been spoken. Have a look at the recent releases by Nine Inch Nails and one will see how it is supposed to be done.

The music is released for free under Creative Commons, because as Trent Reznor of NIN stated - the music will be stolen anyway.

In order to monetise the music all offer the fans something they really want. Nine Inch Nails fans love collectables and fancy artwork, so there were a number of packages available for purchase including the "UltraDeluxe package" sold for $300, limited to a run of only 2500

"Ultra Limited Edition set limited to only 2500 worldwide and autographed by Trent Reznor. 1st Box contains 3 books that include: Book 1: Ghosts I-IV on 2 audio CDs, 1 Data DVD containing all multi-track session files for all 36 tracks and 1 Blu-Ray disc containing stereo mixes of Ghosts I-V as 24 bit 96Khz high-res audio. Book 2: 48 pages of photographs that provide a visual aesthetic accompaniment to the music. 1st page of the book is autographed by Trent Reznor. Book 3: contains two exclusive Giclee art prints. Beautiful pieces. The 2nd Box contains a four-LP set of Ghosts I-IV on 180 gram vinyl. Both boxes are covered in a black fabric slipcase with a metal NIN logo on the front and the numeration tag on the back. "

It sold out within hours netting Trent a $750,000 - production costs profit. By the end of the first week, Reznor had made over $1.6m - money that the typical artist can only dream of on a record label.

Had the music and movie industry showed any type of creativity in the way they make money - they wouldn't be in this mess.

There is a reason people steal music and it's not because they are evil - it's because for the $30 we pay for a CD what do we get? a piece of overpriced plastic. If the big boys started making the "package" exciting and meaning full people will still download music, but they would also buy it in the store.
