The Australian Democrats believe that education, awareness and a good home-based filter is the best option for ensuring your children are protected online. We do not believe the Australian Government should be attempting to filter the internet, forcibly or otherwise.
We are currently in the process of developing a comprehensive and practical cyber safety policy. On our forums you can suggest ideas or what you think should be included. Your ideas, combined with input from experts and our members will result in the cyber safety policy the Australian Democrats take to the next election.
This issue also raises broader questions around censorship generally. In particular, the impracticability of different classification and censorship regimes applied to different media in a world where that content can be easily replicated on another media.
We will also be working on a new censorship policy that seeks to limit all censorship as much as possible, allowing adult Australians to choose for themselves what they want to see, while still providing some kind of protections for children and other vulnerable groups. This will include a consistent approach to classification and censorship across all media.
